Hello once again web folk the last time I posted for this gardening blog I was writing about using gardening apps on your smart phone to help your green thumb along. For this post I was debating on following up with another post on a particular app that I discovered after I wrote that last one that has been rather helpful lately. I decided to give that some more time for me to really get a handle on all that it has to offer before I write my own little review of it.
Luckily for me I have a new garden that my neighbor and I just planted two weeks ago that I can share with you here. Like I mentioned my neighbor came to me in late March asking if my wife and I were interested in going in on a “community garden” of sorts on the free property behind my home. He did not want to impose on our yard so he suggested the plot of land in the back. Fortunately for both of us my wife and I were already in agreement on tilling up a section of our back yard to grow our own vegetable garden already. Lucky for us our neighbor already owns a tiller so we joined forces split the cost and worked a 8×20 section of our yard for a summer harvest.
You may have noticed that we started talking about our little project back in March but we only got to planting it in the first week of May. What can I say life gets in the way sometimes and conflicting schedules made it hard to get this thing started. Finally though we eventually got it planted and on it’s way and not a moment too soon as we were running out of time before it would have been too hot to start a garden until the fall. Considering that this was the first time that either of us had a co planter for a garden we decided to stick with basics and grow some easy vegetables to get us started. We planted three different varieties of tomatoes, squash, eggplant, two sweet peppers, one hot pepper and last but not least some watermelons! Hey you have to have fresh watermelons for the summer time you know!
It’s been about three weeks now and thankfully we have gotten some good rains in that time to help us get a good start. We put down a fresh layer of miracle grow soil got a nice sprinkler set up right in the middle for those really hot days and now we watch and wait patiently. One thing that I had never done before that our neighbor suggested and we are doing is spreading a layer of grass clippings all over the vegetable bed to help keep any weeds from invading our space. Like I said I had never tried the grass clippings trick, I grew up just pulling out the weeds and spending some time in the garden. Plus we have a couple of kids that we can use to pull out those weeds as well. Guess what though here we are three weeks in our first layer of grass clippings on for half of that and we have yet to see a weed in our summer vegetable garden.
So that would be a big thumbs up for the grass clippings keeping the weeds out of the garden trick! Another positive of this little joint venture is the split in the cost and work to maintain. I would highly recommend getting together with some family or a neighbor to help share the burden of cost and work if you really want to grow your own. Also if you are interested in getting some questions answered about planting a summer garden then you should click on that link you just passed on by. There is some good information there for you rookie gardeners out there.
