It’s been a common theme of conversations from gardening forums that I have seen on the web as well as friends and family. That with all the questions about the recession and the economy people have been inspired to learn to become more self-sufficient and in a lot of cases have used the garden to help supplement their income. So as more people look to turn their back yards into a part of their food supply there are a lot of things to consider because obviously the idea of growing your own food is to save you money. So a top priority most of the new born do it yourself gardeners is to find the best and easiest cheap gardening tips to use immediately.
Here are a few of the cheap gardening tips that have been passed onto me and my wife over the last few years. The first and probably most important money saving gardening tip that we got and learned through experience as well was only grow the fruits and vegetables that you will be eating! Don’t grow three different kinds of tomatoes if you don’t like tomatoes! I’m just saying, growing tomatoes is commonly associated with do it yourself home gardening and there are people that just don’t like tomatoes. I don’t know anyone like that and those people that don’t must have an allergy or something how can you not like tomatoes
Here’s another cheap gardening tip don’t buy those expensive gardening gadgets that you see in the garden section of your local Home Depot or Lowes. A lot of those “cool gardening gadgets” were made to take advantage of the beginner gardener like yourself that is looking for the latest tool or toy to help you grow your new garden. You want to find some really cheap gardening tools? Look inside your kitchen utensil drawer I am sure there are some useful items like spatulas or tongs that are not getting anymore use in the kitchen, use them for your new gardens planting needs.
This is a good cheap gardening tip that I would have never thought of on my own. Weeds are a big problem for most gardens and one of the more common solutions for keeping the weeds out is using those rolls of cover tarp. Well instead of spending your money on the tarp cover just walk over to that pile of newspapers you got stacked up in the corner and use that as your weed stopping cover or even some old cardboard will work well also. Another cheap gardening tip is to use those containers you get from your weekly take out meal or even yogurt or soda containers. These all make good starter containers for your little seedlings to get them started.
OK one last cheap gardening tip here before I wrap this post up. If you are going to get into planting plants be aware that the size of your plant of choice has a lot to do with the price you will be paying. The bigger and more established the plant you will of course be paying more money for that. The idea of being a gardener is that you “grow” your garden so to save some money buy the smaller version of that plant you are looking to get. The smaller plants are cheaper and remember that big one at the end of the row there was a little guy at one time. You just need to exercise a little bit of patients with your choice of plants and keep them small and as long as you do your job as the gardener they will grow larger in time and that extra money will remain in your wallet for another day.
For those of you that feel inclined to share some of your own money saving gardening tricks of the trade. Please by all means just leave your cheap gardening resources in the comment section at the bottom of this post
