Urban gardeners are a growing trend in cities around the world. As food prices continue to go up for everyone more and more people are looking to alternative ways to save money and the idea of growing some of your own food is becoming a viable avenue for people to take advantage of.
So how do you go about becoming an urban gardener. Well first of all you will need to decide the location and granted most people that live in cities do not have access to a piece of land to do their own garden. The location is also the beauty of being an urban gardener. Some of the more popular alternatives for growing some plants are window boxes which can provide an easy to take care of area as well as a little green to break up the city view out your window. Another popular for spot for people that may live in an apartment building is the roof as more and more communities are giving access to it’s roof for this very purpose. These two locations are the most popular amongst the urban gardeners, there are of course other locations like stairways for example.
If you choose to start out with a window-box here are just a few tips to get you started. First of all of course make sure you secure the anchors that will be holding up your window-box. Second thing to consider is the type of plant or plants you will be growing. For example a lot of people when starting a garden like to start with an old standard like the tomato. Well make sure you pick a tomato plant that is a bush type plant and not a vine plant as your vine will need some type of stake arrangement to help them grow and your window space may be a little limited for that type of operation. The other plus side to starting out with a window-box is that it will cut down on your exposure to fighting with bugs and pests that normally visit larger scale gardens. Please share your opinions about urban gardening and any tips you may have to share with a few comments of your own and thanks for reading.
